Waste collection services reinstated in affected areas

Waste collection services in Gugulethu, Philippi East/Lower Crossroads and Nyanga have been reinstated under security protection and will resume according to the usual schedule from Monday, 9 October if all goes as planned. In the meantime, the Urban Waste Management Directorate will commence with clearing the backlog on Saturday, 7 October. Services in these areas were unfortunately temporarily disrupted because refuse collection staff received threats of attack unless the City pays protection fees. In addition, services in Manenberg also resumed after gang violence subsided.
The City’s Urban Waste Management Directorate thanks residents for their patience and understanding while the waste collection services in affected areas were temporarily affected due to threats of attack on our staff.
‘The waste collection services in affected areas have been reinstated under security protection. Residents are asked to please be patient as we deal with the backlog. We appreciate residents’ cooperation during this time.
‘Collections staff will be working on Saturday, 7 October to attend to the backlog in the affected parts of Gugulethu, Philippi and Nyanga that did not receive refuse collection as scheduled from Wednesday to Friday this week. (Please see the table below for more details.) Residents in the affected areas are reminded to please put their bins out for servicing on Saturday from 07:30 until 16:00. Should we not be able to clear the backlog on Saturday, we will continue to do so during the week.
‘On Monday, regular scheduled services will commence if all goes as planned.
‘It remains the City’s priority to ensure services continue even during such challenging times as much as possible. We are committed to providing waste collection services while ensuring the safety of our staff who are on the ground delivering these very services to communities. We will work closely with safety and security teams to ensure our services can continue,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, Alderman Grant Twigg.
